“Eye Know” by De La Soul & Otis Redding

It was a blessing to grow up with hip hop. It was even more of a blessing to listen to De La Soul as a child. Their songs are experimental and traditional at the same time. For example, my favorite De la Soul track, “Eye Know,” samples The Mad Lads, Otis Redding, Steely Dan, and Lee Dorsey. It’s so, so much and so, so varied that it shouldn’t work.
But it does.
It works so, so well.
I can’t tell you how or why it works. It just does. De La Soul is magic and “Eye Know” is one of their most magical songs. Are there people who don’t like De la Soul? If there are, I don’t want to meet them.
