In the early 80s Duran Duran released hits like “Rio” and “Hungry Like the Wolf” then fell off my radar for about ten years.
They did a lot in that decade. I wasn’t paying attention. So when they released an album in 1993, I was shocked. In my teenage brain it was a comeback because it had been so long since I’d heard from them.
I was wrong, of course. Duran Duran had been dropping bombs the entire time. One finally landed on me with “Ordinary World.” It was because I was expecting upbeat, 80s pop rock and what I got was this contemplative, melodic song that is heavy with sadness and regret.
Sometimes a melancholy tune like this is just what the doctor ordered.
