I mean, did you think a different song would come after “Rocket Man,” really? Much like Elton John’s classic, David Bowie’s song about a space faring man is somehow both melancholy and enchanting. It embraces a psychedelic 60s sound but offers listeners something more concrete.
It is a song to listen to when you want to leave the planet, both because it’s soft, winding musicality is a relief and because its dangerously realistic lyrics are reminders.
“Sure,” they say, “you can leave. You can float into space on a rocket ship. But then what happens when you’re all alone?”
